feelslikesharks asked: Hey, I saw your fabric painting and dyeing final project on the "padme" tag. When you're finished, mind sharing the steps and such? I want to create my own Star Wars wardrobe and this dress tops the list! Thanks and good luck!
My following post will be my instructions on how to dye the fabric. Please note that this is not the exact same process used by Trisha Biggar, but creates a very similar effect.
After I completed these steps, I fussed with the process for about a month and found another way to activate the dye which created a far more even and smooth blend. Instead of activating the dye directly, I put the CITRIC ACID in a spray bottle and sprayed it directly on the fabric after painting it.
Another thing that is super important to note is that the dress itself is cut on the bias, meaning that the dye must be applied in large diagonal swathes to get the color to follow the same shift in the fabric. For my class project I followed the straight of grain. This will not give you the same effect when draped on a form.
I hope you enjoy the instructions and if you have any questions, drop me a message! :)
